These signed limited editions take us on a deeper journey with the familiar ‘gadgie’ character than perhaps any of Millar’s work to date. In this collection Millar cleverly brings ever more humanity into his paintings, his sensitive depiction of these working men, allows us to connect with them like never before. Their lives and loves, trials and tribulations, hopes and dreams, are laid out before us on canvas.

With scenes of industry so atmospherically portrayed and the souls of these working men so gracefully depicted, this is truly a unique and emotive collection of art.

The Best Artist Of 2009 is?..

You may have already seen something interesting in the left hand column of our website.. it's our poll where you can vote for your favourite artist of 2009.

You can vote from any page on our website --> try the home page.

We've taken a selection of the most popular artists this year... they are:

Todd White

Todd White's work has caught the imagination of art collectors around the world in addition to many Hollywood celebrities, members of the Rich List and ambassadors of the high life. At face value, the pieces appear as simple caricature. Contorted body shapes and exaggerated expressions expose a past in cartooning and animation; the perfect place to develop the skills to understand character from a simple look, or simulate body language with utmost economy.

Sarah Jane Szikora

Coming from a large family Sarah Jane Szikora was constantly looking for ways to amuse herself and soon discovered that drawing and painting were by far her favourite. She enjoyed art and music classes, so it was natural to pursue an artistic career. Sarah completed a foundation course at Harrogate College of Art where she studied a range of subjects, including photography, sculpture and graphics. During this time she maintained a lifelong interest in simple drawing, and always enjoyed the life class most.

Doug Hyde

Doug Hyde is well known for recently being named as the UK's best selling artist, and has often been featured on the BBC news- both national and local. He has also appeared on channel 4 and various radio shows and won the title of 'The most popular living artist in the UK' from BBC National News.
Doug Hyde's art will almost certainly put a smile on your face, just from the affection you begin to feel for the subjects in his paintings.

Henderson Cisz

Henderson Cisz paints in a very characteristic fashion with soft tones and paints many images of cities in a beautifully mood stirring style. He always brings out the effect of weather on the appearance of the urban environment. Not only does this subtly affect the way the people in the painting are standing, but it affects the way the observer feels too.

Alexander Millar

Alexander Millar's prints are incredibly emotive, prompting touching memories of families and loved ones that have long since gone, powerfully mixing sadness and humour.
Inspired by his native town of Springside, and his adopted home of Newcastle, Alexander Millar's paintings depict the shambling shapes of the old "gadgies"; he would see these crumpled characters traveling to and from work, or slightly worse for wear coming back from the pub.

Caroline Shotton

Caroline Shotton's infectious sense of humour shines through her work, somehow managing to create paintings that do not resort to lampooning the classic works and icons of popular culture it inspires. Instead, Caroline draws on genuine affection for the subjects, and you can't help but enjoy the cheeky punning of Caroline Shotton's artwork.

Paul Kenton

As a teenager, Paul Kenton learnt to surf on the wild beaches of North Devon and as a keen surfer he has travelled the world realising inspiration for another passion; his art. Much like Henderson Cisz, he takes great inspiration from the sea and paints wonderfully perceptive urban landscapes.
He says: "My Cityscapes reflect the many moods of manmade landscapes; I find it exhilarating to express furious movement, artificial lights and the vibrancy of a busy City centre at night as well as the subtler moods of a misty dawn at the same venue."

Vote for your favourite artist today, to decide who will be the nation's most popular artist of 2009!
Sculptures from some of our best selling artists

Many of the artists available at the Enid Hutt Gallery are not only great painters but also sculptors, and love creating 3 dimensional pieces of art which bring their paintings to reality. Our outstanding range of unique sculpture is a great addition to the already highly collectable paintings from some of the coutry’s leading artists. Hand crafted using the finest materials appropriate to each piece, be it bronze, bronze resin or hand painted resins.

Hand painted resin is the most popular material used in creating contemporary sculpture reproductions. This is where the artist’s original forms the basis for a mould and from this mould the raw resin sculptures are produced. The raw resin begins its finishing process with refining and finally but most importantly hand painting. In particular, two of our top selling artists Doug Hyde and Peter Smith benefit from using hand painted resin- a perfect match for their contemporary styles.

Many other, more rustic artists like Lorenzo Quinn or Joy Kirton Smith prefer the medium of bronze resin or solid bronze. A bronze sculpture is an original piece of artwork, individually cast and made using the Lost Wax Process. A normal edition run for a bronze is between 1 and 8. However, each piece is classed as an original due to the individual way it is made.

The ‘bronze resin’ process is unique. From the artist original, a mould is handmade in clay to ensure accurate reproduction of the original. Using a mixture of natural compounds, the resin sculpture is then produced, before being finished and polished. Each sculpture is then engraved with its edition number and coated with a layer of pure bronze.

Another great part of the Enid Hutt Gallery's 2009 collection is the new Metal Wall Art and Wall Sculpture Range, a very adaptable style of sculpture. The clean cut lines and various tones of welded and brazed metals suit any room and are ever changing in the natural and artificial light.

The new collection boats fantastic and unusual abstract designs made in the California workshop of Artisan House. Artisan House wall sculptures elevate the look of any room or outdoor setting thanks to a comprehensive array of designs showcasing multi-colored, cool and warm tones; nature-themed pieces with earthly inspirations; and sculptures reminiscent of activities that relax, excite or inspire. Tabletop and freestanding floor pieces also make dynamic statements in the home or out-of-doors .

Click here to view our range of resin sculptures, bronze sculptures and metal wall art.

Invest in Art

Art critics and financial experts are in agreement and according to 'Alvin Hall's World of Money' (BBC Radio 4, August 2008) the art market is enjoying a miracle year. Godfrey Barker of the Evening Standard commented that 'when the stock market under performs, the art market starts singing and dancing'. There was strong evidence to back this claim when a recent Sotheby’s auction of Damian Hirst’s work raised over £70 million. Barker believes that the art market will continue to defy the current trends and will remain buoyant. To find out more about investing in art, contact us to make an appointment with one of our expert art consultants, or drop by the gallery.

At the Enid Hutt Gallery we offer limited edition prints for purchase by artists who's original artwork may be out of reach financially. Today's modern printing techniques combined with the finest light-fast inks and beautiful art paper or canvas, give a result that could only have been dreamed of just a few years ago and mean you don't have to compromise when buying a limited edition print.

Sometimes a limited edition is the only choice if one is ever to own a piece by say Jack Vettriano, Todd White or Alexander Millar Of course, everyone would like to have an original but when that can cost anything up to between five and ten times as much as a limited edition it is simply unrealistic for most. I once spoke with a lady who's friend was gifted a painting by a world famous artist and unfortunately had to return it as they could not afford the insurance to cover it. So not only are some original pieces out of reach financially but even keeping one could be too.

Personally I would prefer a good quality limited edition print over a cheap original but many lesser expensive originals are by excellent up and coming artists so you have to define what is 'cheap'.

If you ever do purchase, it must be of value to you personally as well, it has to jump out and grab you and of course price is another consideration, but if I had the choice between an original by an unknown artist or a limited edition print by say Jack Vettriano, I would go for the Vettriano.

It will always be argued that limited editions are not a good investment. The answer to that is simple. No art, original or otherwise, is a guaranteed investment but is a great one if you calculate the value of pleasure it will give you over the years. It is well reported, that most often than not, limited edition prints by well established artists which are sold after the edition is sold out, make a considerable price increase, even double the original value.

Click here to visit our collection of limited edition prints
