Although Nigel has been so passionate about art, and indeed talented, from such a young age, it happened that for many years life got in the way of his dreams. When Nigel Cooke left school, he joined the Merchant Navy and travelled the world. Travelling continued as a theme of his life after he left the Merchant Navy and began a career in caricatures. This was a stepping stone towards his true passion. On top of that, his work as a caricaturist allowed him to spend time getting to know many cities. Travelling around the UK, as well as to Hong Kong and the USA, as a caricature artist lit the flame of inspiration for a change in direction. Nigel had been soaking up the atmosphere of many cities across the country and the world, and eventually he decided to use these scenes as his muse.

Atmospheric & Textural Original Paintings

This change in career has been successful for Nigel, who has over the last decade or so made his name in the fine art world as a cityscape painter of superlative quality. Part of his success is down to the fact that Nigel is able to capture the atmosphere of cities as well as drawing from precise details of their streets. His style is deeply evocative; he makes use of mixed media acrylics in his original paintings to carry out his distinct approach. You will also see that Nigel likes to add in a touch of abstract flair by using a dripping technique and textural brushstrokes.
