The Advantages of Bronze
Modern bronze will tend to be about 88% copper and 12% tin. But this ratio and composition has varied throughout history. The mixture sometimes included zinc, lead, nickel, iron and other metals. Perhaps the most well-known use of bronze comes in sculpture. It is such a perfect fit for this artform primarily because bronze alloys have the unique property of expanding slightly just before they set. This means that bronze is extremely useful for artists working in sculpture: it means that they can fill in the finest of details much more easily when casting than would be the case if the material did not expand. As the bronze cools, it then shrinks once more. This means that the bronze then easily separates from the mould as it cools.
History of Bronze Sculpture
Bronze sculpture has an ancient history that goes back to the birth of smelting metals. All the greatest ancient civilisations worked with bronze in their arts. Some of the oldest bronze sculptures date back to the Harappan civilisation, who were around in approximately 2500 BCE. This tradition stayed strong through the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. However, after these civilisations past, in the time that Christianity was spreading, bronze became predominantly relegated to artillery and other utilitarian purposes. It took the rebirth of the arts in the Renaissance period to give this nearly lost artform a much-needed boost.
Bronze Sculptures Today
After the Renaissance period, bronze sculpture once again saw a drought. It then received another big push after the Industrial Revolution. At this time, there was a huge explosion of production. With this explosion came an abundance of the tools necessary to make bronze sculpture available on a larger scale. This was particularly notable in Paris of the mid-1800s.
