Alexander Millar's Inspiration

Inspired by his native town of Springside, and his adopted home of Newcastle, Alexander Millar's paintings depict the shambling shapes of the old "gadgies"; he would see these crumpled characters traveling to and from work, or slightly worse for wear coming back from the pub. From atmosphere laden waiting rooms and railway platforms of his father's workplace, young Alexander grew up with a romantic outlook, developing a sense of nostalgia and enjoyment for these working class subjects.

Humorous Memory & Nostalgia

Incorporating a sense of a quiet alcohol-fueled rebellion, Alexander Millar prints such as You Looking at Me and Homeward Bound are an excellent examples. Staggering home from the pub, umbrella in hand or confronting a bottle in the road, these gadgies have obviously had a few too many. Youth & Young Manhood - Peaky Blinders

Alexander Millar has taken a step back further in time to explore his wonderful 'gadgies' as younger men. Seen in their youth as full of stylish swagger and confidence, these characters were inspired by an old leather case Millar found hidden in the attic. While working on this collection, the Peaky Blinders series was also appearing on TV. Set in the same era and capturing the same attitudes and styles of Alexander's youthful gadgies, we see this influence mixing in with his pieces. In contrast to the humorous artworks, these have a moodier undercurrent with touches of melancholy, romance and mystery.
