Fiona was born in Aberdeen in 1964. She studied at De Montfort University in Leicester and Winchester School of Art before teaching in Derbyshire. But her first loves are and always have been the dramatic coastline and landscapes of Scotland. Her father was a gamekeeper and his work enabled her to develop a special relationship with the countryside and to discover almost limitless subjects for her paintings. She now works from her studio overlooking the Moray Firth where she creates her unique and sometimes sizeable compositions.

Fiona Matheson originals feature a bold use of colour and a fabulous textural quality. For her, each composition is an adventure full of surprises and unexpected outcomes. The landscape is the star of the show, be that a small croft or a Scottish harbour, and yet it is the confident use of colour and the interesting textures which first draw the eye. Her work exhibits a fascination with the changing seasons and man’s relationship with the countryside. Fiona Matheson finds beauty and meaning in every detail.

Each breath-taking piece leaves a lasting impression and yet in revisiting Fiona’s work there is always something new to discover. It is as if she has sneaked in to alter the picture when your back is turned. Of course she hasn’t! Her work is simply so wonderfully multi-dimensional that it is a different aspect of each painting which demands your attention each and every time you stop to appreciate her work.
