Fletcher Sibthorp is a highly well-respected artist from London; his paintings are often large-scale and he is known in particular for his artworks using oil which usually depict an element of dance. He is extremely inspired by the movements of many styles of dance such as contemporary dance, classical dance and ballet. Human Form in Motion
Born in Hertfordshire, Fletcher Sibthorp studied illustration at Kingstown University and graduated with Honours in 1989. He cultivated interests at an early stage in the human form and in the movement of the body. Mostly experimenting with oils, he took inspiration from such artists as Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Gustav Klimt and Edgar Degas. His interest in the body and in movement first saw him become a master of painting sporting activities. In this way, he began to take on some big name commissions, such as painting the image for the Evening Standard magazine's Wimbledon Tennis Tournament edition.
From Sport to Dance
Fletcher's evocative and striking artistic style saw him be involved with many more high profile commissions, such as those for British Telecom, the Royal Shakespeare Company and for the front cover of a biography of Bertrand Russell. It was around this stage that he turned away from sport and towards dance as his central theme. This direction has proven to be just as successful, with Fletcher Sibthorp's art winning multiple awards such as the 2006 Fine Art Guild's John Solomon Award for Best Selling Artist.
