As a teenager, Mary Batchelor hoped to attend art school but her parents persuaded her to take a course in physiotherapy at the Western Infirmary instead. It wasn’t until her two young children started attending school that she took the bold decision to explore her artistic talent further. Mary attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art where she studied under Peter Howson, David Linley and Norrie Kirkham.

Inspired by her outstanding tutors, Mary began to flourish and eventually submitted a piece to the Royal Glasgow Institute. This was accepted and then sold. Following her successful debut, Mary was invited to exhibit at several galleries. It wasn’t long before she gained an enthusiastic following.
Inspired by the great Scottish colourists and the Scottish landscape, Mary works only in acrylics. Scotland is her passion and she loves to paint both her favourite locations and the new places that she discovers.
She captures the changing light and the essence of the scenery with bold colours and a broad application. Mary manipulates the paint swiftly and this imbues her work with amazing movement and spontaneity. She has managed to bring her favourite landscapes alive with her unique and dramatic style.
Mary works from her studio in Helensburgh and is a member of Paisley Art Institute. Her work is now highly sought after across the world and features in many private and corporate collections.
