An Unusual Introduction to Lowry's Paintings
When Sean was a child growing up in Middlesbrough, his father famously relieved the local art gallery of a Lowry painting. The work depicted Middlesbrough Town Hall. Durkin senior promptly held the Lord Mayor to ransom with the Lowry. He promised to return the picture if the Mayor raffled his underpants for charity, arranged for the art gallery to be open on Sundays and provided a new alarm system for the establishment! Durkin was keen for working people to be able to enjoy fine art and took drastic measures to effect change for the local community.
Sean Durkin was only eight-years-old at the time. When he found the stolen painting on the mantelpiece at home he was immediately fascinated by the ‘matchstick’ people that Lowry created and the amazing atmosphere conveyed by the composition. The painting profoundly affected him and was to inspire his own artistic endeavours.
