The Best Artist Of 2009 is?..

You may have already seen something interesting in the left hand column of our website.. it’s our poll where you can vote for your favourite artist of 2009.

We’ve taken a selection of the most popular artists this year… they are:

Todd White

Todd White’s work has caught the imagination of art collectors around the world in addition to many Hollywood celebrities, members of the Rich List and ambassadors of the high life. At face value, the pieces appear as simple caricature. Contorted body shapes and exaggerated expressions expose a past in cartooning and animation; the perfect place to develop the skills to understand character from a simple look, or simulate body language with utmost economy.

Sarah Jane Szikora

Coming from a large family Sarah Jane Szikora was constantly looking for ways to amuse herself and soon discovered that drawing and painting were by far her favourite. She enjoyed art and music classes, so it was natural to pursue an artistic career. Sarah completed a foundation course at Harrogate College of Art where she studied a range of subjects, including photography, sculpture and graphics. During this time she maintained a lifelong interest in simple drawing, and always enjoyed the life class most.

Doug Hyde

Doug Hyde is well known for recently being named as the UK’s best selling artist, and has often been featured on the BBC news- both national and local. He has also appeared on channel 4 and various radio shows and won the title of ‘The most popular living artist in the UK’ from BBC National News.
Doug Hyde’s art will almost certainly put a smile on your face, just from the affection you begin to feel for the subjects in his paintings.

Henderson Cisz

Henderson Cisz paints in a very characteristic fashion with soft tones and paints many images of cities in a beautifully mood stirring style. He always brings out the effect of weather on the appearance of the urban environment. Not only does this subtly affect the way the people in the painting are standing, but it affects the way the observer feels too.

Alexander Millar

Alexander Millar’s prints are incredibly emotive, prompting touching memories of families and loved ones that have long since gone, powerfully mixing sadness and humour.
Inspired by his native town of Springside, and his adopted home of Newcastle, Alexander Millar’s paintings depict the shambling shapes of the old “gadgies”; he would see these crumpled characters traveling to and from work, or slightly worse for wear coming back from the pub.

Caroline Shotton

Caroline Shotton’s infectious sense of humour shines through her work, somehow managing to create paintings that do not resort to lampooning the classic works and icons of popular culture it inspires. Instead, Caroline draws on genuine affection for the subjects, and you can’t help but enjoy the cheeky punning of Caroline Shotton’s artwork.

Paul Kenton

As a teenager, Paul Kenton learnt to surf on the wild beaches of North Devon and as a keen surfer he has travelled the world realising inspiration for another passion; his art. Much like Henderson Cisz, he takes great inspiration from the sea and paints wonderfully perceptive urban landscapes.
He says: “My Cityscapes reflect the many moods of manmade landscapes; I find it exhilarating to express furious movement, artificial lights and the vibrancy of a busy City centre at night as well as the subtler moods of a misty dawn at the same venue.”

Not only is reading online a great, fast way of finding out what’s happening in today’s world of art but it will reducing your carbon footprint. Unlike a newspaper which is being distributed worldwide already, and has been argued that it can be almost equal to reading on paper. The magazines we offer are less available publicly as they are from galleries only and this means that it costs more in terms of ‘greenness’ to distribute these magazines by post.

This is where Yudu.com comes in, Washington Green Fine Art has invested in having their publication, the Fine Art Collector published interactively by Yudu who create amazing carbon neutral publications which work as if you are really reading the magazine. To make sure all YUDU digital publications are as carbon neutral as possible, they completely offset all their CO2 emissions by donating money to Carbon Clear, a leading carbon management company. They invest in projects that improve living standards in developing countries and which provide global climate benefits with clean energy projects and reforestation initiatives and their main goal is to eventually have everyone reading online.

So see what you think and have a read online and click here to read all our literature and magazines online.

Tragic Death of One of the Country’s Greatest Contemporary Artists

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death of one of the country’s greatest contemporary artists – Govinder Nazran. Govinder died on Tuesday 30th December after an accident on Christmas Day which left him with severe head injuries.

Govinders art training began in Bradford in the North of England, where he studied Graphic Design from 1980-1983. After that he then went on to study for a Higher Diploma in Graphic Design, specialising in illustration, at Lincoln Art College.

After completing all his formal training he decided to move to London, approaching all of the major city publishers with his portfolio. It was there that he worked on illustrations for children’s books, and after 6 months moved to Cambridge where and continued working as a freelance illustrator.

Upon moving back to his home town of Saltaire in West Yorkshire, Govinder took up the position of designer for a greetings card company, which involved all aspects of product design and development. Following that he became a photographic art director, directing fashion shoots all over the world. He did this for the next year or so until 1993, when he decided to swap his hectic photographic job and lifestyle, for a quieter life back in Saltaire. He spent the next five years here in the UK, working freelance on card designs with major publishing companies.

It wasn’t until 1999 that he decided to enter the fine art market and approached Washington Green with his portfolio. Since joining them they have published over 40 of his designs and many into sculptures.
2009 would have been the tenth anniversary of Washington Green working with Govinder, a decade of the most amazing and creative art from one of the most talented, gentle and innovative artists they have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

‘It is often the brightest star that burns for the shortest time’.

As a mark of respect, we have withdrawn all Govinder artwork from sale until further notice.

Welcome to Our Blog

The aim of this blog is to keep you up-to date with all that’s happening in the gallery, about the things we are doing or plan to do with our business, our products and our artists and also to broadcast any events in the area from the many art exhibitions and festivals throughout the year.

To get things going, here’s a bit about how we got started.

It all began as a quarterly exhibition, showcasing a fabulous array of internationally renowned artists artwork and wall décor in the family hotel, the Craws Nest Hotel, Anstruther. This was held for many years with an increase of custom every year. After great success, there was much demand for premises, so we opened the Enid Hutt Gallery in 1990 and registered as members of the Fine Art Trade Guild in 1994. Since the beginning we have double the size of our premises enabling us to have an on-site, state of the art workshop where we create stunning framed pieces of artwork and framed objects like football shirts, golf clubs, racing suits and pretty much anything else you can think of and it gives us a better opportunity to show our huge portfolio of artists work and wall décor to its full potential. The gallery stocks an extensive selection of diverse and individual open prints, limited edition prints, hand crafted metal wall art and original works not to mention the mirrors. Our mirrors are made in Europe and the UK by some of the World’s best mirror manufacturers who provide the highest quality wall mirrors available today, all of which can be purchased on our website.

Our website, which started in 2001 has grown from merely a directory of artists work to a full e-commerce website promoting our artwork and mirrors internationally and it’s a great way to see what’s new and happening in the gallery and with our artists.

We would like any comments or feedback you have, we value your input. Please make use of the comment form at the bottom of every post to let us know what you think.

Thank you
