The Connor Brothers
The Connor Brothers' passion for absorbing cultural phenomena and coming up with their own liberating forms of expression has an interesting background story. So it goes, ... the two brothers Franklyn and Brendan Connor were brought up in a very controversial Christian cult called 'The Family'. Other notable figures whose parents were part of the cult included the actors River and Joaquin Phoenix. Growing up under this limiting system meant that the Connor brothers were for the first sixteen years of their life extremely cut off from the outside world.

Art as Freedom
It was however when they both had hit sixteen years old that they decided that they needed to get out of this situation and experience the outside world for themselves. So they left their family and moved about on freight trains for several years, before finally they settled in Brooklyn. Having been starved of information and culture for so long, they unsurprisingly had insatiable appetites to learn, watch, listen and read. Soon they developed their own practice whereby each of them would explore a new cultural avenue through independent research before then sharing what they had learned to the other through notebooks and sketchpads.
Insatiable Culture Appetite
This practice of sharing information through their own language was what then prompted them to start creating their own art. These notepads and sketchbooks became at once a means of making sense of what they had learned and a form of expression in itself. Because of this unique creative process, their art often contains references to historical themes, as well as contemporary theory and culture, and everything in between. Their project is therefore like all the best postmodernist art in that it explores how meaning is created and interrogates how we understand the world.
The Connor Brothers are fictional characters created by the artists known as The Connor Brothers. Their work prompts us to explore the boundaries between truth and fiction, and how we create meaning from what we experience.
