"I love exaggerating virtually every element, focus, blur, colour, highlights, and this process really allows me to use the skills I've developed over the years when it comes to manipulating and controlling the paint."

When she was offered her first part time job in a gallery, there was an old-fashioned model shop next door with vintage toys. Sarah Graham would spend hours trawling through the shop for quirky subjects that she could use for her work. These close-up paintings with the use of miniature toys and later sweets all contributed to building an extensive body of work, which then led to her first exhibition in a contemporary London gallery.
Over the years, Sarah Graham has developed a method of painting for the purpose of creating a 3D illusion. It has become the most natural way for her to approach creating an image but is still a challenge to her. She begins with a photograph that is just right in terms of balance, colour and subject to backdrop. She then sketches and scales up from photo to blank canvas with the aim of taking the painting far beyond the limits of the original photo. She loves to exaggerate every element such as focus, blur, colour and highlights to fine-tune the overall composition.
