Paul Hedley Artist
Paul Hedley was born in 1947 in Chatham, Kent. He studied at the Medway College of Art and, later, the Maidstone College of Art, where he received his Diploma in Art and Design. This formal training built on his already deep passion for art which he had cultivated since he was a child. His technique, as it developed over the years, pays respect to the impressionist and post-impressionist French style as represented in some of his favourite artists Edgar Degas and Edouard Vuillard.
Using sketches and photographs, Paul Hedley builds up his artworks in such a way as to preserve the distinct quality of natural light. The figures of his art are often in timeless poses, so that these paintings transcend the present moment and fit into a far wider painterly canon. At the same time, his ability to precisely capture expressions, moods and natural light give the scenes a fleeting quality. They are real life moments given to you in a stunningly poised expression of tone and colour.
Paul stands out from many of his contemporaries due to the classical aura of his paintings. This aura partly reflects his means of creation which looks back to a traditional method. This method usually involves drawing on a toned ground in chalks and then frequently combining these drawings with layers of watercolour and gouache. His blended skills of artist and draughtsman ground his artworks in a profound and thorough technical mastery. We are excited for you to explore his rich and sensuous creative world.
