Hamish Herd

Welcome to the arresting world of Hamish Herd art. We have a selection here of Hamish Herd's pieces of Jesmonite sculpture that we think really show off his mastery. Jesmonite is a composite material which is often used in fine arts, having been invented in 1984. Hamish Herd uses this material in a superlative fashion, crafting sculptures of studied perfection. One simply can't look away from his sculptures, so powerful is their composition and execution.

Hamish Herd Sculptures
Hamish Herd was born in South Africa but now is based in the UK, where he works in his studio in North Yorkshire with his wife and fellow artist Brenda Herd. Hamish Herd has always been passionate about art, going on to study the History of Art for his BA degree. After working for a while as a secondary school Art teacher, he then went on to dive into a career as an artist; he has now been a professional artist for 25 years. A versatile artist, Hamish has explored painting, drawing and designing. It is, however, his latest works as a sculptor that has, quite understandably, garnered so much attention.
Sculpture of Classical Quality
You will be able to see from Hamish's sculptures that this is a contemporary artist with that sought after ability to create artwork of classical quality. This classical quality comes through in his high levels of skill, as well as in the poise which he as an artist shows. The detail is fine and real to life. The sense of movement and shape is of the highest order. And yet, whilst highly controlled and ordered, there is also a lyrical expressionism to his work that comes through in his gestures towards the fantastic and the absurd.
Jesmonite Sculptures
Herd's Jesmonite sculptures, then, are at once highly realistic, whilst also sometimes nodding towards a mythical strangeness. Limbs or torsos are elongated; bodies are softly twisted; and sea horses rise out of the waves with power and elegance. This is at once a place of half-heard fairytale and of vivid, beautiful physicality and presence. We are thrilled to have some of the work of this prodigious talent in our gallery collection.
