Mark has worked in a number of different styles over the years, but it was in figurative oil painting that he found his medium best suited to the exploration of mood on the canvas. As Mark has said,

"I believe that the mood and feeling within the painting are as important as the composition. This is an area that I enjoy exploring - it's such an exciting challenge to try and capture a moment- good music always helps."

Masterful Figurative Painter

We think that Mark Spain's artwork brings together the perfect combination of technical skill and intuitive touch. The precision in his artwork no doubt stems from his training in technical graphics at Medway College of Art. His talent saw him chosen to create a limited edition set of etchings for Kew Gardens as well as producing work for the National Westminster Bank and The Dorchester Hotel. He has since moved across to oil painting to commercial and critical success. As well as being very much a master of the technical craft, he paints with real feeling. He has said of his creative practice that,

"I always like to create a little energy with the brush strokes, to help give the finished painting some life. Once finished I often place the picture out of sight for a few days and then re-visit it later with fresh eyes to see how I feel about it, and whether I can improve it in any way."

Movement, Form, Texture & Colour

You will see that his central focus for much of his figurative oil painting is the female form. Mark explains,

"I enjoy the challenge of expanding ideas based on the female form. Movement is a key to many of my pieces as well as form, texture and colour. This is something I feel I will be able to work on and progress with, evolving and perfecting."
