Few artists have produced work as readily and universally recognised as that of Dali. Eccentric and grandiose, he married artistic skill with incredible self-promotion! His egotistical tendencies offended many during his lifetime but his legacy is an extraordinary and unique canon of art.
The Life of Salvador Dali
Born in 1904 in Catalonia, Spain, Dali’s incredible talent emerged during his childhood. His work was first exhibited when he was just 14 years old. He went on to study at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando but failed to gain a diploma from the institution after declaring that he was more intelligent than the examiners!
Dali’s early work was heavily influenced by the contemporary artists he most admired including his compatriot Picasso. He experimented with cubism but was introduced to the surrealist friends of Miró and then began to develop his own memorable surrealist style. This was influenced by Dada, renaissance art and modernist techniques. His was primarily interested in capturing dreams and delusions in paint and exploring the psychology of time.
