About Michelle Smith
Michelle Smith currently lives in the Scottish countryside with her husband and two children. She grew up in Perth and came to earn her honours degree in textile design at Duncan of Jordanstone. She soon brought her artistic skills to the world of fashion and design, moving to New York to create print and patterns for clothing and interior firms. Moving between the two coasts of the US, Michelle then spent the next decade creating lead designs at a number of fashion brands such as Osh Gosh B'Gosh and Tommy Bahama. After success in these fields, however, she happily found her way back into the realms of fine art, and we are all thankful for that.
Beauty of the Coastline
You will see that her recent work focuses on coastline scenes from above. Her resin artwork takes its inspiration from the beauty, the power and the intricacy of the ocean waves. Mixing colour pigments with layered resin, Michelle has developed a unique and highly effective method of capturing the vivid light and colour of the swaying and spraying waves as they break over the shore.
Stylistic Experimentation
An experimentalist in both form and texture, Michelle Smith produces truly captivating artwork. Her current focus is on aerial views of azure coastlines. That said, she clearly also has a passion in bringing a sense of emotional urgency to her work. As such, her landscape painting seems to blend the experiential with the natural. These beautifully stylistic renderings of the sea from above have that uncanny ability of being highly detailed and realistic, whilst also impressive in terms of pure abstract impact.
