Passion for Figruative Art
He brought his passion developed in these early years into practical use at the renowned Falmouth School of Art. It was here that he fostered a particular interest in figurative work. Shaun has continued to cultivate this interest, at the same time honing his craft with oils. Shaun's figurative art is very fine indeed and always strikes that balance between sensitively rendering the human form and expressing something of the artist's mood and perception.
Continued Development Through Life Drawing
Shaun has not only become a master of oil painting over the years, but he has also become masterful when it comes to life drawing. Many of his pieces of artwork are focused on the human form. He has only become so skilled in this art because it is something that he works on every week, and continues to do so. In fact, he and his wife run weekly life-drawing classes where he continues to develop his skill as a figurative artist, and where he helps other artists do the same.
Shaun Othen Originals
It is very interesting to chart the development of Shaun's work over the years. He started with a strictly photographic approach, where the focus was on achieving as close to photo-realism as possible. Pursuing this style meant that Shaun was able to become technically highly advanced. He then start to break from this rigid structure by bringing in expressive elements to his original artwork. Shaun now plays with texture and line in order to bring abstract elements to his figurative painting. He is able to achieve an impressive balance which still maintains touches of intense realism with a sprinkling of abstract expressionism which elevates the work.
